Dean was co-founder of
OnExamination.com which was acquired by the British Medical Journal
(BMJ) Group where he now works. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
He is working on a research publication training programme aimed at academic faculty staff and delivered entirely online. This programme will run in partnership with a US University, written by the editorial teams at The BMJ and powered by BMJ Learning.
At BMJ he enjoys developing new educational business and working with external collaborators. He helped develop the Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes, validated by University of Leicester which was the Silver winner Best Online Distance Learning Programme at the 2013 e-learning awards.
He was the founding Editor and is now "Editor-at-large" of the online journal BMJ Case Reports (casereports.bmj.com) that won the award of Best New Journal 2010 at the ALPSP.
Also at BMJ he has contributed to The BMJ Awards, the The International Forum on Quality and Safety, and the Clinical Teacher of the Year for BMA Wales. He continues as a consultant for onExamination.com which based in Cardiff.
He has written a popular ECG textbook (ECGs by Example, Churchill Livingstone), several MRCP handbooks and maintains the 12-lead ECG library (ecglibrary.com).
Previously a Consultant Physician at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, he has also worked on the Consensus Guidelines for Diabetes Mellitus across Wales (Designed for the Management of Adults with Diabetes Mellitus across Wales: Consensus Guidelines. 2008) as chair of the sub-group for Standard 4 (Clinical Care of Adults with Diabetes. In Bridgend he was chair of the LDSAG.
He recently undertook clinical work at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant and also voluntary work for a charity in Kitale, Kenya (web: mercytrust.org, facebook: Mercy Rescue Trust).
He sits on the Finance and Resources Committee for Cornwall College. He is the current chair of Grampound with Creed Parish Council.
